YOUNG NORDIC JAZZ COMETS
definition: an object in outer space that develops a long, bright tail
The jazz federations in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland have worked together since year 2000 to provide artistic platforms for young and talented jazz musicians. Young Nordic Jazz Comets has been our flagship project to present the future of Nordic jazz. The spaces explode annually, when five most topical Nordic bands’ orbits cross at the YNJC showcase. The energy burst is so powerful that it overthrows the laws of physics, materia shifts shape and particles catapult to trek new astral maps for many light years to come. Take a look at the past years’ roster to find not a handful but a galaxy of musicians and bands who have started at YNJC. (link to list!) This year the clash of the comets takes place in Northern Sweden, in the city of Umeå.

Since 2000 Young Nordic Jazz Comets has been a Nordic collaboration of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The project continues to evolve and flourish with the support of the jazz communities in each respectful country. Thank you! You truly are the heart and soul of Nordic jazz. Also we want to thank the Ministries of Culture and the various culture foundations who support our organizations in our everyday work.
In Denmark the YNJC band is selected by Jazz Danmark’s artistic board exclusively. The selected ensemble receives coaching for international market and concert offers.
Finnish Jazz Federation
In Finland, the process of choosing the YNJC representative is based on applications according to which four bands compete in the national finals where a professional jury evaluates the performance and quality. The winner gets festival concerts and promotion.
FÍH & IMX
In Iceland the band is chosen by the Jazz Department of FIH, the Rhythmic Music School. Iceland Music Export provides support for the chosen group to take their music abroad to the YNJC showcase.
In Norway the band is chosen by the Norsk Jazzforum administration around May – June. The Norsk Jazzforum focuses on band promotion.
In Sweden they hand-pick their national representative. The bands apply for the place at the YNJC showcase, and Svensk Jazz assembles a reference group which chooses the band based on the applications.
Europe Jazz Balance
The Nordic network has committed to enforce the norm-critical awareness in the selection process.
