Jazz Camp for Girls in Helsinki

13.10.–16.10.2025

Helsinki’s first Jazz Camp for Girls will be held at Vuotalo on October 13–16, 2025. The free camp offers exciting and fun musical experiences during the autumn holiday week for girls aged 8–14. The teachers of the camp are Jasmin Afaneh and Stina Myllys.

The camp provides inspiring and playful musical moments during the autumn break. Participants will be creative, form their own band, invent a band name, compose their own music and play together! During the four days, music will be learned through improvisation and by exploring new ways of playing.

The camp is open to girls and non-binary children. It is designed for ages 8–14, but the exact age is not a strict requirement. The most important thing is the curiosity to try band playing and the willingness to learn together.

Both beginners and more advanced players are welcome: bands will be formed from participants of different levels. All that’s needed is an interest in making music together and meeting new friends.

Two groups will be formed, each with 6–8 participants. The camp will be taught by musicians and music educators Jasmin Afaneh (Sointi Jazz Orchestra, Pop & Jazz Conservatory) and Stina Myllys (Meri-Helsinki Music Institute / Rytmimajakka). Guided by the teachers, the children will be inspired to explore new approaches to playing and to create music together.

Camp Schedule

The camp takes place at Vuotalo (Mosaiikkitori 2, Helsinki) Mon 13.10 – Thu 16.10, daily 10:00–14:00. The camp culminates in a final concert on Thursday, October 16 at 13:00 at Vuotalo, where participants will showcase their new skills to an audience.

Registration

Registration closed on October 3, 2025, and places were filled in the order of registration.

Jazz Camp for Girls is a concept launched in 2014 by JazzDanmark. The goal is to inspire young girls to explore rhythm music. The idea is to provide participants with an encouraging and safe environment where they can try different instruments, play in a band and compose music.

The camp in Helsinki is organized in cooperation with Sointi Jazz Orchestra, Meri-Helsinki Music Institute and the Finnish Jazz Federation. Jazz Camp for Girls is supported by the Nordic Culture Fund, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Music Foundation (MES).
