Jazz Federation navigates with EcoCompass!
In 2022–2024, the Finnish Jazz Federation starts taking steps towards more environmentally-friendly direction. We have created our first environmental plan with the Finnish EcoCompass management and certification system. Like the first criteria of the certificate stipulates, we are committed as an organisation to comply with the environmental legislation, and to continuously improve our practices.
The focus of our EcoCompass program is to work towards carbon neutrality in our own activities and to increase environmental awareness amongst our membership. In 2022–2024 we measure the environmental impacts of our touring and other activities by Puuni Ltd., and make an action plan towards carbon neutrality.
Cutting emissions and reducing our carbon footprint requires scrutinising all of our productions and other activities, as well as our office habits. We already sort our waste at the office and try to recycle or reuse all used materials. We have switched to green electricity for our office space, and we serve vegetarian meals and/or responsibly caught local fish in our meetings. Even before our carbon footprint is measured for the base year 2021, we anticipate, that the event production, touring and business trips are responsible for the most emissions. Those are, however, in the core of our existence, so we want to make a true effort in trying to find new, low-carbon and less-consuming solutions to bring live jazz to everywhere and everyone in Finland!
Our second focus is on supporting our members in their environmental efforts. In our environmental program, we pledge to provide information and training events to our membership on more environmentally friendly production methods. In addition, the Jazz Federation will carry out development projects aiming to support the whole jazz industry’s environmental skills and actions, in collaboration with its members and other organisations at the art and cultural sector.
There’s a long way to go, but we are ready for the first step: the Jazz Federation seeks to fulfill the EcoCompass cert criteria already in August 2022!
