New content has been added to the Elma.live platform to accelerate the sustainable development of the live music industry. The latest lesson offers tips and concrete examples of actions that event organizers and performing artists can use to encourage and activate their audiences in promoting sustainable development. New material can also be found in Elma’s Sustainability Program action bank as well as in the collection of links to additional sources of information. In Elma’s partner introductions, the spotlight this time is on Tiketti. New content is available in both Finnish and English.

Elma.live – the Home of Sustainable Music – is a free digital platform published in the fall of 2022 that provides information, tools, and support for sustainable development to actors in the live music industry in Finland. With Elma, actors can learn about sustainable development, build a sustainability program, assess their carbon footprint, and share information and experiences with other users of the platform.

The framework for the service is the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which cover ecological, social, and economic sustainability. Elma’s goal is to make sustainable development a natural part of every live music actor’s daily work. In June 2024, Elma’s content has been updated.

Lesson No. 14: How to engage the audience in sustainability

Cultural events are an important part of their region’s social and cultural ecosystem. They provide benefits such as economic value and community building while supporting cultural diversity. Concerts and events have a unique power to bring people together, to a shared experience – the audience is at the heart of events. However, large crowds also put a strain on the environment in many ways. By working together, music actors and the audience can reduce environmental impact, strengthen social sustainability, and encourage society at large to act responsibly.

Elma’s 14th lesson, “How to engage the audience in sustainability”, offers concrete tips and examples of actions that event organizers and performing artists can use to activate and encourage the audience in promoting sustainable development. Tips and links to actions can also be found in Elma’s Sustainability Program section’s action bank and the supplementary reading list in the Learning Materials section.

Supporters make Elma service possible – Partner introduction: Tiketti

Elma.live is a free tool available to the entire music industry in Finland, made possible by the supporters and partners involved in its development. Elma’s partners in 2024 are the domestic ticketing service Tiketti Oy and Sitowise Oy. In the June partner introductions, the spotlight is on Tiketti. Tiketti aims to promote sustainable development not only through internal company actions but also in collaboration with various stakeholders. Elma’s article details the different aspects and measures that make up comprehensive sustainability at Tiketti.

The Elma.live project is administered by the Finnish Jazz Federation, and the technical implementation of the platform is managed by Sitowise. Positive Impact Finland started developing Elma.live in 2022. Positive Impact is now part of Sitowise, and the development of Elma.live and the partnership will continue in Sitowise as a result of the acquisition.

The platform has been designed and built with funding from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, administered by the Ministry of Education and Culture, as well as the Finnish Music Foundation (MES), the ESES foundation, and the founders of the KEMUT network.

The development of Elma has also been supported by Gramex, Open Creative House Oy, Circus & Dance Info Finland, and the Finnish Music Creators.

Elma originated as a collaborative project among the founders of the KEMUT network, which, in addition to the Finnish Jazz Federation, includes Finland Festivals, LiveFin, Music Finland, Finnish Musicians’ Union, and the Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras. The network was established in the spring of 2020 to promote sustainable development in the live music industry.

Elma’s material that requires free registration, such as lessons and the Sustainability Program tool, is currently only available to professionals operating in Finland.
